Kona Coffee Grades

The state of Hawaii's labeling laws require the prominent display of the words "100% Kona Coffee". When you see "Kona Style" or "Kona Blend" dont't walk, run away.
Here are the various grades of Kona Coffee standardized by Hawaii's Dept of Agriculture which you can add to your arsenal of real Kona coffee knowledge.

PeaBerry- This tiny round highly dense Kona coffee bean is considered rare as it is only found in 5 % or less of all Konacoffee crops. The Arabica tree's cherry at times will produce these single tiny seeds [beans] due to stress instead of the usual two beans [seeds] producing a more concentrated, rich, smooth however not bitter flavor. We call these the "Bachelor beans" due to their refusal to share their lives with others. It is the prized Kona coffee pick of all Kona coffee estates and working Kona coffee farms. Kona Peaberry makes the ultimate "Real Kona Coffee" dark roast.
